After no tournament in 2021, it appeared that Britain’s junior women would miss out again in 2022.
The January tournament was rescheduled for this summer after it appeared that the IIHF would cancel for a second straight year.
Great Britain has a new head coach in Angela Taylor, and expectations will be high for an experienced roster.
The vastly experienced Chamonix Jackson will captain a team featuring many fascinating players.
Goaltender Emma Nichols is 18 years of age and plays in Sweden for Södertälje SK.
Defender Ellie Patrick (who can also play forward) represents Hoosac School in New York and she isn’t the only player from North America.
Stanstead College is the home of Lydia Walsh and this past season the 17-year-old defender gained plenty of experience from 37 games.
Ellie Wallace is a forward to keep a keen eye on. She played at four levels this past season and impressively recorded 6 goals and nine assists in fifteen Women’s Elite League games for Queen Bees.
Chamonix Jackson almost doesn’t need an introduction. Having made herself a part of the senior women’s team, it was a no-brainer that Angela Taylor would pin a ‘C’ on her jersey. In the Elite League, Jackson put up 28 points including fifteen goals in just 17 games.
Having been relegated in 2020 after winning just a single game, there will be a hunger from this group to claim the gold medal.
The tournament will be hosted in Istanbul, Turkey, with games played on two ice sheets at the Zeytinburnu Ice Rink.
It’ll be an unusual set-up for this Division II IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship, as nine teams compete for medals.
Great Britain is in Group A alongside Turkey and Mexico.
Group B consists of Netherlands, Kazakhstan and Latvia, while Group C comprises Austria, Spain and Iceland.
Each nation plays two group games before the tournament moves into its second phase.
Monday 27th June: Great Britain v Mexico 20:00 (18:00 UK time)
Wednesday 29th June: Great Britain v Turkey 20:00 (18:00 UK time)
Let us assume GB wins their group for the sake of the following explanation.
They will then be placed in Group D, play a further two games and be classified as seed 1A.
As a side note and for clarification, the nations placed second in their group will compete in Group E, and those fishing third will slot into Group F.
July 01
Great Britain v Winners of Group C (Austria, Spain or Iceland)
Remaining fixtures are 3C v 3A and 2C v 2A.
July 02
3B v 3C, 2B v 2C and 1B v 1C.
July 03
Great Britain v the Winners of Group B (Netherlands, Kazakhstan or Latvia)
The remaining fixtures are 3A v 3B and 2A v 2B.
The classification (placement) stage shall follow on July 5, with only eight of the nine nations playing.
The teams finishing first and second in Group F will play for 7th place.
The teams finishing second and third in Group E will play for 5th place.
The team finishing third in Group D will play the team that finished first in Group E for third place/bronze medal.
The teams finishing first and second in Group D will play the tournament’s final game, with the victorious nation winning the Gold Medal.
Rules for classification: 1) points; 2) head-to-head points; 3) head-to-head goal difference; 4) head-to-head number of goals scored; 5) result against closest best-ranked team outside tied teams; 6) result against second-best ranked team outside tied teams; 7) seeding before tournament.
The IIHF report that games will be shown live on a webcast with full details to follow shortly before the tournament begins.
