Toronto Marlies Edition: Where are they now? Part 14 – Tobias Lindberg

Tobias Lindberg entered the Toronto organisation as part of a huge trade which hit the headlines but conversely slipped away rather unnoticed.

The Swedish winger was drafted in the fourth round, 102nd overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
He played junior in his native homeland with Djurgårdens IF and would be selected 46th overall by the Oshawa Generals in the 2014 CHL Import Draft.

His only season in the OHL was hugely successful.

Lindberg recorded 78 points (32-46-78) in 67 games and added a further nineteen points in twenty-one postseason games as Oshawa clinched an OHL Championships.
The left-handed winger would go on to play a pivotal role in the Memorial Cup, netting three times and adding two assists, one of which occurred on the overtime winning goal by Anthony Cirelli.

That summer Ottawa penned Lindberg to a three-year entry-level contract and he turned professional later that fall in the American Hockey League with the Senators affiliate.

Lindberg made a bright start to his AHL career, recording 22 points (5-17-22) in 34 games before being involved in a blockbuster trade between Toronto and Ottawa.

A nine-player trade that included Jared Cowen, Colin Greening, Milan Michalek, a 2017 second-round draft pick moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Dion Phaneuf, Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey, Ryan Rupert and Cody Donaghey.

The Swedish forward was reassigned to the AHL and initially made a good impression, accruing twelve points (6-6-12) in 22 games for the Toronto Marlies.

A rebuilding Toronto Maple Leafs called up a plethora of prospects late in the 2015-16 season including Lindberg who made his NHL debut on the road in Buffalo.
With his family in attendance, Lindberg recorded an assist on debut and would go on to play six NHL games in total before being reassigned to the Toronto Marlies.

Despite only playing three playoff games on what was a stacked Toronto Marlies roster, hopes were high that Lindberg would prove himself a key cog in the AHL the following season and put himself in the minds of Toronto management moving forward.

The 2016-17 season proved a disappointment for both player and the organisation, however, as Lindberg struggled to make an impact in the 44 games he played. Six goals and ten assists were all he had to show offensively and his inconsistent performances were extremely frustrating to watch.

Toronto cut ties with the former Ottawa forward on 6 October 2017, trading him and a sixth-round draft pick to the expansion Vegas Golden Knights, in exchange for goaltender Calvin Pickard.

From that point on, Lindberg struggled to hold down a regular spot in any organisation and hasn’t played again in the NHL.
The winger was traded from Vegas to Pittsburgh to Ottawa and back to Vegas, who released him as a free agent after not tendering a qualifying offer in 2019.

The 25-year-old spent the 2019-20 campaign back in his native Sweden for Timrå IK who compete in the Allsvenskan but at the time of writing is currently a free agent

Lindberg suited up for five AHL teams through four seasons, suiting up for Binghamton Senators, Toronto Marlies, Chicago Wolves, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Belleville Senators.
In a combined 225 games for those teams, he recorded 32 goals and 89 points.
