Toronto Marlies Edition: Where are they now? Part 9 – Greg Scott

During his time in Toronto, Gregg Scott never once received the nod to pull on a Maple Leafs sweater.
Despite him singing a two-year NHL contract with the Toronto organisation following a three-year entry-level deal, Scott would spend the entirety of his playing career with the Marlies.

Undoubtedly the BC native has had to fight for everything he has earned in his career to date.

Four seasons in the WHL with Seattle Thunderbirds saw Scott accrue 205 points in 278 games but more importantly earn an ELC with Toronto as a free agent having been overlooked in the NHL draft.

The Canadian forward turned professional in 2009 and made use of his the immediate AHL opportunity afforded him by posting ten goals and twenty-two assists in 71 outings for the Toronto Marlies.

Scott would join the Reading Royals (Toronto’s ECHL affiliate) for their Kelly Cup run and played a huge role by recording ten points (1-9-10).
Unfortunately, Reading lost a seven-game Conference Final against eventual champions that year, Cincinnati Cyclones.

The 2010-11 campaign also proved productive (31 points in 55 games) but it was Scott’s third year in Toronto where he broke out and made a huge impact.

A forty-four point haul included 21 goals as Toronto topped the Western Conference and would go on to enjoy a deep playoff run.

Scott struggled to have as much offensive impact during the post-season but he did record a third-period hat-trick to hoist Toronto to a 3-1 victory against Abbotsford after the Marlies had trailed through forty minutes.

A finals sweep as the hands of the powerhouse Norfolk Admirals denied Scott and Toronto a championship.

The 2012-13 campaign would prove to be Scott’s last in Toronto but he was once again a key contributor. Not quite the offensive production during the regular season with 31 points, albeit he played fewer games but it was in the playoffs where the Victoria native left his mark.

In game one of the post-season, Scott scored four times against Rochester Americans, including two power-play markers, to kick-start a sweep of the cross-border rivals.

An assist on the game-winner in game two was followed by opening the scoring with a short-handed tally in the third and final game of the series.

Toronto fell to eventual Calder Cup Champions Grand Rapids Griffins in the next round although they did incredibly well to push them to a six-game series.
Scott last real contribution for the Marlies was a two-goal salvo in game two which inevitably featured a short-handed tally and an empty-net insurance marker.

As a free agent in the summer of 2013, there were rumours of NHL offers for Scott but having spent five years toiling in the AHL, it was time for pastures new.

Brynäs If in Sweden came calling and it was a happy three seasons as Scott produced 123 points in 146 games during what would prove his first stint in Scandinavia.

Scott was only lured away from Sweden by the prospect of the KHL.
During three seasons in the Russian based league with CSKA Moscow, he played in a slightly less offensive role but helped them win a first Gagarin Championship in 2018-19.

Having left Sweden as a free agent, he rejoined Brynäs If after departing Russia and wore an ‘A’ as he recorded 37 points in 51 games during the most recent season.

Having signed a three-year contract with the Swedish outfit in 2019, the 32-year-old will return next season to play for the team situated in the city of Gävle.

A man for all situations, Marlies fans remember Greg Scott as an incredibly hard-working, diligent and versatile player who left it all out on the ice but also had a great eye for the net.

His AHL career consisted of 270 games all played for the Toronto Marlies during which he recorded 54 goals and 84 assists for 138 points.
In 26 playoff outings, Scott netted ten goals and added four assists.
