Ten years in Texas: Travis Morin

If you think of the Texas Stars then the first player that comes to mind is Travis Morin.
The veteran forward has just signed on for his tenth season (AHL deal) with the team and is the only player to skate each season for the Stars since their inception in 2009.

Morin was selected by the Washington Capitals in the 9th Round, 263rd Overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, while at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Upon finishing his College career, the Centreman turned professional with South Carolina Stingrays.
Morin proved he was far too good for the ECHL level, scoring at 1.19PPG through the regular season and at point per game during 39 playoff games.
In the 2008-09 season, Morin collected an All-Star Award, Sportsmanship Award, recorded the most assists (62) and a Kelly Cup Championship with the Stingrays.

Hershey had the opportunity to have a look at Morin after signing him for a pair of loan spells but unwisely chose to release him and the rest is history.

His Texas career is currently comprised of 618 games, 167 goals and 361 assists for 529 points (0.85 PPG). Equally dynamic in the post-season, Morin has produced 64 points (23G/41A) in 87 playoff appearances.

Texas have reached three Calder Cup finals in franchise history, including during their inaugural 2009-10 season.

Having lost to Hershey in 2010, Texas would not be denied the second time around as they defeated St. John’s 4-1 to clinch a first championship in 2014.
Morin was instrumental in that succes as he picked up regular season awards including Most Assists (52), Most Points (John B. Sollenberger Trophy) (88), player of the month (twice), player of the week, Most Valuable Player (Les Cunningham Award) selected for the All-Star Game and named to the First All-Star Team.

Through the playoffs he recorded Most Assists (13), Most Goals (9), Most Points (22) and in doing so was rightfully selected as Playoffs MVP (Jack A. Butterfield Trophy).

During the 2017-18 campaign, Morin was yet again a key component as Texas progressed to a third Calder Cup Final appearance.
The Minnesota native produced the most assists (51) through the regular season but despite fifteen further points in the playoffs, he and the Stars had no answer for the Toronto Marlies who prevailed in seven games.

The 34 year old has signed four NHL contracts with Dallas through his career but only been given thirteen opportunities in North America’s top tier, registering one assist in the process.

It’s highly likely his time in the NHL has passed him by but Morin will still be a huge part of the Texas Stars moving forward.
It’s no surprise that the left-handed shot holds the majority of Texas franchise scoring records and his haul during the most recent campaign saw Morin move inside the top 75 of all-time AHL regular season points scorers.

Captain of the Stars in 2015-16 and 2016-17 and an Assistant either side of those seasons, Morin could once more be handed the captaincy for the upcoming year with Curtis McKenzie having moved to pastures new in Vegas.
